Dome Pondering Movie Review: Obvious Child (2014)

What is it about?

A stand-up comedienne deals with life after losing her boyfriend, her job, and then becoming pregnant during a period where she feels alone and afraid.

Who is in it?

Jenny Slate - Donna Stern

Jake Lacy - Max Brown

Gaby Hoffman - Nellie

Favorite Scene:

After blowing Max off for a potential night of hanging with a friend who had an in to Los Angeles, Donna realizes that wasn't the road or security she needed at the time and decides to bolt the situation.

Favorite Quote:

"I remember seeing a condom; I just don't know exactly what it did."

Review:

Obvious Child is a quirky little film that can be dissected into many ways, some good, some bad, some just not very good. Overall, the film was entertaining and was a pretty fair watch.

For me, I went into this without much info and quickly realized after a bit of brain wracking and a pop clue from the wife that Jean Ralphio's little sister from Parks and Recreation was the lead - Donna Stern for those with more movie IQ than me. And of course, Slate was really great in this role, possibly a breakout one for her, as it was funny, quirky, unique, and she really carried the film. In many ways, without Slate, this might have been a complete dud.

Comedy is the key to Obvious Child, as Slate's character, Donna Stern, deals with life, but uses jokes and awkward dialogue to shed some light on it. However, as stated, there are many bad things  as well. I for one at times found some moments of the 89 minute film to drag, and I felt the plot could have been a bit deeper and connecting. But that's just me.

Nonetheless, Obvious Child is an interesting watch - a short watch - and can be entertaining if you let it be.

Grade: 2.25/5

3 Up
1. Tammie Jo Shults - Kudos to the captain of the Southwest aircraft that blew an engine. Shults was able to land the plane safely with busted engine, thus minimizing the fatality of the fiasco to just the one person who unfortunately was sucked out of a window. So crazy. All of it, so incredible.
1a. Southwest In-Flight Crew - More kudos to TJS's staff who not only pulled a woman being sucked out of a plane back into the aircraft, but managed to keep everyone onboard safe and poised during the emergency.
2. James Shaw Jr. - There were even more heroes this week as James Shaw Jr. wrestled a rifle away from a madman who rushed a Waffle House in Tennessee and opened up fire. Took lots of guts, but Shaw saved countless lives.
3. LeBron James - I don't understand how any sports fan can say anything about LeBron James. The dude once again is carrying a rather dubious contending roster on his back during these playoffs.

1. Bartolo Colon - Mannnnnnnn, this dude at 44 years old and at who knows how many pounds overweight, almost threw a perfect game against the defending World Series Champions on National television. Bartolo, don't you ever change.
2. Beyonce - I probably could just leave this "UP" as just "Beyonce", and really, most wouldn't even bat an eye at it. Regardless, she earned it this week, slaying as always. Beyonce killed it at Coachella with some awesome performances, reuniting with Destiny's Child, and of course, making history as the first black woman to headline the festival.
3. New York Mets - Even this Yankees fan has to give it up to the Mets and their hot start. They are playing some fun baseball, and well, it's backed by those big arms they need to rely on. Kudos to the Amazin's!

2013 Bucket List - #29 Attend Wrestlemania

It only took me twenty eight years and twenty-nine events, but I finally (finally!!) made it to Wrestlemania. I've attended so many wrestling events in my lifetime, from small local shows to pay-per-view events, from small local promotions, to the global companies, but never had I gone to the big one - Wrestlemania.
Upon hearing the huge event was returning to the metropolitan area at Met Life stadium, I knew I had to attend. As soon as tickets went on pre-sale, I purchased them...way back in November. I knew, if not now, then when? If not this year, then probably never. Some might not understand the importance of it, but to crazy wrestling addicts like myself, this is the show. And while it wasn't on the 2013 Bucket List, this was on my absolute lifetime list, and this past Sunday, I placed a big fat check mark next to it. The following is a little review of my Wrestlemania 29 experience, live!

The Pondering 10 - Favorite MLB Uniforms

Unlike most sports, baseball uniforms carry a lot of tradition and history. It's rare that you see baseball teams deviate away from the history of a club, and if they do, it's usually an ownership change. For the most part, in baseball, the uniforms are sacred. Because of that, Major League Baseball has many teams with uniforms that are very, very significant, and also, very stylish. As we did for the NFL (Pondering 10 - Favorite NFL Uniforms), the following Pondering 10 will take a look at my favorite MLB uniforms.
